clean and freely moving shift linkage is important, also to get best leverage, shifter should be adjusted so that shifter is parallel with the linkage rod

if you like your shifter at an odd angle, that means pulling the linkage off the shift shaft and realigning the splines until the shifter and linkage rod are parallel

I also had same issue. I was told to be aggressive with my SV650 and this has worked for me. Now I push it hard past neutral and into 2nd and it works. Although if the revs are high, it doesnt work as easily and I end up red-faced stuck in neutral till the revs are low enough for the 2nd gear to engage. Anyone know how to solve THIS issue?

Its not a good idea IMHO to force the gearbox to change gear. Its better to work out whats causing the problem and fix that rather than putting to much pressure on the gear lever. You only need a little bit of pressure just to take any slack out of the lever / mechanism.

If you are experiencing problems it'll be one of the things mentioned in this thread thats causing the problem. Or its your technique thats causing it.
