It finalyl dawned on me that if I do a front-back nod, with my black helmet and black visor, it's probably completely invisible

When I first got my big bike I found it really akward to nod sideways (to the right)like everyone was doing to me - usually resulted in a wobble. But now it is quite natural and much more noticeable than a forward nod, surprisingly still reserved for car drivers coming towards me that give way (probably because I think they wouldn't understand why I was cocking my ear like a dog).

Coincidentally, this morning was the first I started giving the thumbs up to cars that pulled in for me - the jury's out on whether that will continue.

I nod by dipping my head fwd and right... kinda like a stereotypical wink if u were actually winking...

Someone nodded to me coming the other way quite quickly on the a12 (or was it the a130?) on saturday and I was so surprised I didn't nod back. Generally at NSL-ish it all happens too quick to bother so no-one ever does... I felt really bad after.

I nod down & right, kida like Ping said, the way you move your head to wink.

I used to get p****d off by those who don't nod back, but now I just find it funny. The best ones are the scooter riders wearing the wrong gear. They prolly think they can't nod or they'll fall off at their max speed of 25mph!

I nod in whatever way I think will be seen by the other rider at the time, so sometimes it's down and to the right sort of 'wink' style, other times it's a definite forward nod. If the road's straight enough and it's safe then I'll give a nice big wave too.

If it's a Harley rider I wave, nod, shake my legs, anything to get them to notice me and guilt-trip them into waving / nodding back!!

And finally, if I've just passed a 'safety' camera van, I'll give a nice clear thumbs-down with either hand to notify oncoming riders that they are about to enter a potential accident black-spot!

Gotta say having just got back on road bikes, that i noticed the `nod` has changed a bit, all these side nods, made me feel i was doing it wrong!
always try to nod if it doesn`t distract my riding.
when we went to europe 20 years ago, everyone did the v for victory two fingures (nice way round) so we did same, alright till we meet spectators from yugoslavian bike grand prix coming the opposite way, all 100`000 of them that got a bit tiring, funny when we broke down, about 30 bikes stopped to help.
not so funny when it happen a day later outside an army barracks, a squadie came out with a gun bigger than he was, and moved us on, not easy with a kwaka 750, with panniers, and shed of luggage.
good trip though.

If I'm on the Deauville a gracious lenghty wave. Don't often get anything back in return. Well at least not from the sportier bike riders.

If I'm on the SV I rarely have time to lift my hands from the bars so will do the "dog nod".
