Nasty

Even in full textile gear I never feel as safe as wearing half a cow.

Now I have a decent bike, I'm seriously considering saving up and investing in a set of Crowtree leathers.

Okay, stupid question time folks; I have been considering buying a pair of leather padded trousers for some time now, but need to know as to their water-proofing capabilities. Are there any pairs that exist? (ie verified by someone on here?)
I was told that (certain?) leather gear was not generally recommended for winter use at my training school a while back (I think!), but the padded polyester/nylon stuff. Was I mis-informed?
Any specific recommendations would be appreciated!

IMHO no leather isnt waterproof. Also at this time of year its not warm either.

Textile / Cordura stuff is what you want at this time of year. The worst thing you can be is cold and wet, it'll effect your concentration levels and you wont be able to ride properly.

You'll need waterproof over-trousers with leathers. But leather is reckoned to be *the best* protection against abrasion.

I currently have padded over-trousers, (cheap akito brand, it's all I could afford at that time!), and they do the job fine (I reckon they saved my right knee earlier this year when I low-sided after nearly being hit by mundano man), it just go tme thinking that anything over 30-40mph, and it could well be a different story! I think I'll try the (thinnish) waterproof over-trousers worn over the leather pair, as soon as I get some that is! Also, as fizzwheel says, I would like to consider warmth at this time of year as well, as a cold body equals a cold mind

Lucky Strike, have a look at the EDZ, Cold Killers etc range of under garments, or go into Milletts or somewhere like that and see what they sell in the range of thermal long johns etc.

Still not as good as textiles IMHO but should help keep you warm.

Cordura loses its waterproof capabilities after a while, unless it's lined with gore-tex internally. Only proper wear-over rainsuits are truly waterproof.

After my recent off, my mind changed a lot over safety matters. Full leathers unless in scorching heat. And then only moderate pace. hmmph.. there are times I wish my heart was in chess, not motorcycles...

Easiest thing to do with Cordura is to get the spray on water repelent that you can reproof gortex walking gear with, this stuff isn't checap (tenner a bottle) but does the job, spray it on and it sorts out the water proofing for a season or two (doesn't work on leather - especially if it's like mine with vent holes).
