a'sporty' bike is not the issue here ,its the riders experience im on about, but a powerful bike is just asking for trouble ,even a 'humble' er-5 or cb500 (anything like that )can b a bit much for some until theyve got a few miles under their belt, you running up your partners bike is a prime example ,its not the bike its the rider ,but 100+bhp is a bit too much at first ,no???

Ermm no, ive been riding since i was 17 (now 22), i hit him at about 10mph, he had stopped at a roundabout and went to go but then stopped, i just rolled foward and didnt brake quick enough.
bhp and cc has nowt to do with it, throttle goes both ways! im now riding my partners zx9 and i only passed my test last aug! think thats too much for me? i have more respect for big powerful bikes than a do i smaller one.

You could argue that a modern sports 600 might be a better choice for a novice/learner rider. Better brakes/suspension could make things easier. The main factor is the rider and sadly in this case he was found lacking....as it turns out he is fine and the bike could be worse...you live and learn.

I think Tim got it about right....he slowed/waited then went back for his mate, you can't ask fairer than that.

your a far more experienced rider now (9-10 mths )than a total newbie (2 weeks ish) as i said b4 'the bike is not the issue here 'the throtlle does indeed go both ways but now you have an idea of what its like ,i bet a novice doesnt and is taken by surprise with how fast they actually pick up speed ,and that goes for a lot of bikes that arent ;seen; as fast ,your wee bump was however its put ,a not paying attention moment /a mistake ,whatever ,point is its those 'mistakes' im on about ,on ANY bike they can b sore/expensive but on a bigger bike theres more potential for a slip up .its a well known fact that people get on a bike thats beyond their abilities and do something stupid .bin it whatever .most accidents i would think are of this scenario.one question -why did u not jump on your zx-9 as soon as you passed ??dont tell me ,your partner thought it would b too much for you with (poss little) riding experience on a big bike ,thats all im saying ,its experience that counts ,b careful out there

No its because i couldnt get insured )well i could but it was stupidly high) on her and shes a lil on the big/heavy/tall side for me, got a lower seat on her now and ive got abit more muscle to hold her up with now.

that just illustrates my point -how much riding experince can a 17 yr old have -none thats why its so dear(and loads of other factors)
an older person (say 40)will get cheaper ins yes but that doesnt mean theyr less likely to do something stupid as they both have very little time on a bike .
a 40 yr old with 5yr exp against a 40 yr old with no exp both on zx-10s or the like ,there wont b a big price diff between their ins ,but i know whos bike id go pillion on(if forced,i dont like pillion)

I can remember having plenty of brown trouser moments on my little 500cc Guzzi V50 (0 - 60 in 3 weeks ) after passing my test, I think its par for the course as a new rider.

IMO any one is vunerable to stuffing up on any size bike, if inexperienced, although I spose if youre gonna stuff up its probably better to do it on a smaller less powerful bike, but I do think the Direct Access does tend to let people loose on bikes that are well beyond their capabilities.

Just thank god he was ok, and he can put it down to experience.
