If norton is that bad, why is it the biggest selling AV/Firewall software?

I like it, its an all in one soloution and for the novice like myself, it does the job

Windows is the most used OS in the world too!

I know that, but its a general question, that if these products are so bad, they why are the most used? Poor marketing by other products, the other products not being as user freindly?

That and the fact that Norton was once good, if not the best / only / first product to hit the market. The name stuck to people's heads, and when you talk about AntiVirus to someone that doesn't even know how to turn a computer on they'll instantly think / say "Norton".

I use AVG - got fed up with Norton eating all my resources (you don't really realise how much impact it has on the system until it's no longer there).

For what it's worth, AVG only stops a relatively small %age of the EICAR virii (well, v7 did anyway, I've not tried it with v7.5). When I spoke to them about it, they said that they didn't bother with the older ones. This struck me as odd - what happens if someone starts spreading an older virus around again? I didn't get a response to that question.
So, I'm not sure I'd recommend AVG to someone who isn't at least a little bit techy.

We use McAfee on about 30,000 PCs. Occassionally we do get a loop/lockup where the poor puter is running permanently at 99% virus scan and requires a kick.

I normally set people up with avast as I fell out seriously with avg for freebies.

My linux servers use antivir within my procmail delivery filters.

BTW eicar is not a virus, but a test pattern designed to allow you to test your anti vus system without actually infecting yourself with anything nasty.

Fair enough, and much like the VW golf, it just got bigger and heavier as time went on...but they saw the error of thier ways.

Mines up for renewal in a few months, so will ask those in the know when time comes to renew...however, theres always deal on norton
