Sounds fine, - If you're not in a hurry it might be worth putting the battery through a few charge cycles before writing it off - takes a fair kick to start an SV

Most expensive battery I've bought

(Now waiting to see if it'll last any better - yeah right)

Can the wires be removed from these connectors to splice in some different lengths?
Where to buy small amounts of various coloured braided wire? What gauge to use?
And also where to buy heatshrink tube to seal the connectors?

Apologies for double post and the question barrage.

Yes you can remove the contacts if you want, but you'll strugle without the proper tool. You could look at cutting the wires and "inserting" an extension wire. This should give you enough length to move the connectors out of site, and keeps everything standard. Just buy some inline crimps from any electrical store, or even Halfords, B&Q etc. You'll get wire & heatshrink from the same place. Just make sure you use a proper crimp tool with them. Not sure what size this cable needs to be, it all depends on the load, i.e. how many Amps are flowing in the circuit. Try and match the cable size to what's already there. If your not sure 1.5mm wire will probably be big enough. It doesn't do any harm if the wire is bigger than required, but you can make a fine old mess if the wire is too small.
