Yep, that's what I'd do, fill it. If you leave it like that it's going to rust, so at least protect it with, well, anything. I'd use zinc primer probably. How popped in is it?

With teh mesh, I bought stainless stuff from Halfords, expensive but it's good quality and you can see it in the flesh. And to fit it, hot glue gun, and bend the edges round the panel to give you a big area to secure.
