I was ever so slightly coerced toward buying a 'special'(?) charger when I picked up the SV, they gave me some spiel about the battery going flat which I simply ignored as I have never allowed a battery to go flat in 28 years car or bike therefore the charger is pointless. Then it dawned on me that the headlights are now compulsorily on all the time so the battery is far more likely to go flat especially with short trips in winter time. So the charger may have to be purchased as winter approaches after all! Thing is, the salesman didn't remind me that the lights are now permanently on which would make the charger a more sensible purchase!

There's alway's the option of a bump start,if you have a hill or a friend handy.

Hill or friend indeed....paddle both legs like a frog....all the best riders do it that way

Okay

So got a new battery on way to work yesterday evening. Fitted it on bike this morning and it started up fine. It was much easier to put in than the other one cos its the right size and fits perfectly well. When I took the old one out, the connection on the negative terminal was loose and I think that's what the problem was. I've checked the charge on the old one and that seems to be ok so I'm guessing the loose connection was the problem.

I'm going to take the bike to the shop I got the battery from and get the regulator checked. The guy there said he'd check it for me to make sure that its not the regulator thats faulty.

So hopefully that's the end of my woes for now. If it starts playing up again, then Yorkie Chris, I may be calling for help.

Ask the guy what the charging voltage is, as a rule of thumb for all bikes and cars with 12 volt batteries, the charging voltage should be 14-15 volts.
