So it still might be worth test riding a load of bikes just to be 100% certain. It maybe that after test riding the SV1000, IL4 600, 750's and IL4 1000's that you decided to wait until the credit plan ends and save up some more money...

With what I lost buying and selling bikes that I was not happy with, it would have been cheaper to just have gone out and bought the "too expensive" bike I really wanted in the first place.
Thats a very good point toypop, saying that i do really like the SV1000 anyway so i dont really see it as the worst of a good bunch. if some one offered me a gixxer K series or a ducati would i take it.... yeah... but being 22 i see myself having many more bikes to come anyhow the killer is insurance i was offered about £500 fully comp on the SV but £900+ on any SuperSport..

I thought about buying my thou for a while as it cost a fair bit more than the 650 and the price range opened up alot of other bikes. And a few 'well its only a bit more on top' bikes aswell.

But, I have had so much fun on my 650s and I like the size, position etc I went for it. If I didnt I would always want to have owned one.

Buying new (there are still a few faired ones around) you might loose a bit of money, I paid 3500 for my 06 plate with 4400miles only 3 months ago.
The best ones to buy are the one older owner ones from biketrader they will be like new and in 3 years you will probably loose what you would taking a new one out of the showroom.

For me it had to be brand new but will the original poster settle for second hand?

I mean he could save a grand and get a decent IL4 1000 sports bike at a few years old and TPFT on one of those probably ain't no more than Comp on an SV650?

I saw someone on the Ninja forum just now asking how much their 04 10R is worth and "about £4500" was the answer... If you get something like that I can guarantee you will never be kept awake at night wondering "what if..." - that is what happened to me when I played it safe and compromised.

The grand saved over purchasing a new SV1000 could be put aside incase he has to pay for repairs due to not having comp insurance.

Which part of the SV is it that you love - the SV1000 looks like the SV650, however it rides very differently.

The 650 is widely recognised as a great handling bike, whereas the 1000 is a bit of a brute - it needs 'muscling' into a corner, rather than just dropping in.

The brakes and suspension are much better than the 650, and the engine...............

If you can get a test ride, then try before you buy as some people I know have been a bit 'disappointed' with the 1000 compared to the 650.

I bought a 1000 without testing it, and initially missed my 650, however I soon grew to love the 1000.

Whats the power delivery like compaired to the 650? I hear people saying how different fazer thou's are to the 650 (which id expect obviously) but id like to know about the 1000. Guess i should try to get a test ride.

Im thinking of going sv1000s at some point... Ive saved up a fair amount of money so soon ill pay off the finance and might move up... Its either that or stick with the SV650 for a while and upgrade it (suspension and "stuff")...

Power delivery is similar to the 650, you just have 50% more of it, and it lasts a lot longer, and it tries to rip your bloody arms off!

The SV1000 makes going fast very easy, too easy sometimes, whereas on the 650 you always know when you are going quick, as you have to work at it a bit more.

As I suggested earlier, it is a very different bike to the 650, apart from the overall looks. Some people have gone from the 650 to the 1000, thinking it would be 'the same but better'. It is not necessarily 'better', just 'different'

Get a testride if you can, and try and give it a good blat out of town, somewhere were you can use full revs in 1st, 2nd and 3rd (beware - it will do about 93 in second ) - then you will be able to see the difference

I had a similar dilema....

I looked at a K5 GSXR 600 and a new K5 SVS1000 in black, I liked both and was at the time doing alot of commuting between Yeovil and Amesbury and I thought the SV 1000 would be a better bet, but...

Not having test rode either and wanting a change from the SV, I was going to buy a K5 GSXR 600, but then parked next to it for another £1500 was my GSXR 750.. which I bought, my thoughts on it are well documented !!!

I found a few insurance quotes that the GSXR 6 was cheaper or within £10 of the SV1000, so shop around for insurance before making your mind up would be my advice. But I think as you've probably found your age is going to nobble you here...

A year and half on, I'm insuring my GSXR 750 for less than the quotes I got on a GSXR 6 / SV 1000...

Personally I'm of the opinion that if you can afford it, then you should buy what you want, you'll always have that "I wander what x, y or z that I really wanted would have been like" thoughts in your head.

If you're keeping your 650, why not have a different bike in the garage / a toy for weekends to enjoy and then keep your 650 for a work horse, its what Liz has done.

She commutes on her K5 SVS, and on nice days or weekends out comes her Ducati 749S, she used the Ducati Insurance scheme and then insurance is very reasonable and the SV is covered as a 2nd bike.

Do your research check out all your options, you might be surprised, but at the end of the day go for what you want.

Well im not too fussed about IL4's they are too commo and to my ears sound poor (unless you are bouncing off of the rev limiter).

As far as noise goes i like The V4's but im not too sure about the VFR... The V-twin is obvious a gorgous sound.

The other thing is i dont want an out and out sports bike as i carry luggage a fair bit and do high milage (21k miles in 2 years).

As for a week end bike naaa with the job im in (the forces) i cant be bothered with the messing about ill have every few years i move base...

So i guess for me its either the pre Vtec VFR800, the SV1000s or stick to 650. (or mavbe the VFR 1000 see what happens with that.)

What you think?

I think your blinding yourself to some awesome bikes...

I've got a K5 GSXR 750.. in 9 months last year I did

nearly 12000 miles
1 x weekend on the North South
1 x AR06 ( luggage for two people plus tent
1 x 5 day trip around Southern ireland ( again luggae for two people )

Plus various evening / weekend rides, and I used it to commute to work on.

I dont like the view that some people have that the only thing you can do on a sportsbike, is ride it at weekends in the summer when its hot.

With the right luggage and attitude you can make any bike do anything you want it to IMHO.

So you're back to the basic thing of stuff what anybody else thinks and just buy what you like

Indeed... I can see what you are saying. I agree with what you say but like i said i dont like the IL4's just dont like the power delivery not enough low down torque. Besides im only 21 so i think a Sports bike would be a little expensive to insure.

If i was going to go for a sports bike it'd be an SP-2 but the fuel dont last long enough.
