A high percentage of the HP printers I used to get back because they were broken, didnt print well, etc etc, the owners had used cheap low end cartridges or refil cartridges. The deskjets were at one point really sensitive to ink quality and quantity and I've seen some cheap refils cartridges cover the inside of the printer and the paper with ink and end up in a right mess.

I'd stick with the OEM stuff and just try and buy them cheaply from somewhere if it were my printer.
ditto,

i used to work for a compatible cartridge company, and can tell you - the customer service and complaints department took a fair beating.

That would be my preferred option but paying £30 for two cartridges when the printer was only £50ish really hacks me off!

I used to insist that we purchased OEM stuff at work too until the last few months.

There are now some compatibles that offer a guarantee, which if a machine fault is caused by one of their products they will replace the machine. Obviously I only do this on the printers that are sub £200 and we only have a handful of those, but the actual saving is quite substantial.

Again my home printer is less than £100 so its not too much of an issue (yet).

I've not bought HP-type stuff from them, but generally I've been impressed with http://www.refreshcartridges.co.uk/.
