Does the rotor try and aggressively steal screwdrivers ie a strong magnet. The magnets may be visible - if so are they all in place? (some have a cover to stop them falling out of place) Some early ignitions (CDI type) can cause a dvm to have erratic readings.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
That resistance is slightly high but at least they're all the same.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
All the same but all higher than Suzuki say is acceptable. Would make sense as it heats up that the resistance gets even higher and charging system goes kaput. It would also explain why I could only get home the other day by revving the crap out of the bike.. causing it to crank out some power to recharge the system, otherwise it stalled. Readings at the battery with the engine running are low and only just up to 13 volts-ish with the revs held high.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
+ Going to wire the reg rec straight to the battery as apparently the wiring saps a lot of voltage. Another common problem and common mod on the DRZ.
This bike is now competing with the amount of mods and fixes I did on my SV!

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
When the stator in the street went, it was at high temp. It would only crank or a couple of cycles. When I left it to cool it would fire up as normal.
I can't remember the numbers, although I'm pretty sure I had on phase a fair way out and was still insulated to earth.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
I had a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 classic that made a screeching/wailing sort of noise occasionally when setting off. It was diagnosed by a dealer as a faulty stator and they fitted a reconditioned stator but it still kept doing it although it never affected performance or anything else. It remained a mystery.
Just thought I would mention it. |

More trailer painting this week - Giving the mudguards a fresh lick of paint, and adding some reflective stickers so it stands out more.

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
More work on the VFR today. One of the bolts attaching the right hand caliper had seized. I'd previously tried to get it out using heat and an impact gun with no luck so I left it for the winter service.
It's not your standard fitment as it connects to a secondary master cylinder as this bike has combined brakes. I tried the impact gun again but it still wouldn't shift. So out with the angle grinder and chopped the captive nut up. That got it off. I then replaced the parts with items I'd already bought. The other bolt in the photo is from the bl**dy mudguard. Despite copious amounts of antiseize they still stick and the allen head just chews up. Fixed Sent from my SM-T510 using Tapatalk

Re: What have you tinkered with today?
Swapping out the DRZ stator. Also rebuilding the carb, again with new jets etc. Removed the pair system. Making up a blanking plate to replace it. Finally creating a loom to go straight from reg/rec to the battery to improve charging voltage by bypassing all the unneccessary stuff that saps power inbetween. A busy day.
