Mr Jon,

The SV isn't that bad - I went from a ZX7R to the SV and while it's definitely not as good, it's not awful.

OK, so there's no power at the top end. Stop riding the power and go back to riding the torque between 7 and 9k. They do shift - I've spent whole days riding with quick friends on litrebikes and, while I had to work hard on the gearbox, keeping up wasn't, for the most part, impossible. Especially with one mate who started to get a bit frustrated that every time he looked in his mirrors I was still there.

The fairing is excellent, as is the riding position. What you lose in sportiness you gain in reduced weight on your wrists. The wind protection is great - you can cruise all day at a ton on an SV without a double-bubble, what more do you want/need? If in doubt, try cranking an unfaired Bandit 12 up to about 150 and see how much you love the SV's fairing after that. And you're only two foot six, I'm surprised you can see over the clocks let alone feel any wind blast!

OK, so the handling's a bit suspect - wind the pre-load up to the max at both ends, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Or just quit whining and go and buy a proper bike. Which, btw, isn't a 600!

(Cough)ZX6R(Cough).

I've had two ZX7R's and absolutely love them. Modern SS600's are quicker but there is nothing that look as good imho.

7Rs only made about 112bhp and with 200+ kilos to lug along, the weight really eats into the extra power. Sublime handling on sweeping A-roads though.

I'd lean toward a modern GSXR750 or a 955i Daytona as a next step after the SV - both kick out the thick end of 150bhp and, most crucially, don't tend to be ridden by girls. Daytonas are dirt cheap to insure, too.

Also to add to the mix Jon's hornet hirebike was unfaired, and felt like riding a BMX compared to my naked SV, so that didn't help him fall in love with it at all. Well Jon, you may have doomed me too, but I still haven't tried one, cos I ma happy in my ignorance whilst I can't afford to change!

Have been eyeing up the GSXR 750 for a while now. Would want to test ride it first to make sure.

Alas I cant afford the insurance at the moment so it will have to wait till next year.

Try a 955 Daytona then. I'm paying 200 quid tpft for the SV, and it's only 350 for a similarly-valued Daytona (compared with 1500 for a GSXR750 and about 2.5k for a litrebike)

If you can afford to buy a 750, then you can afford to insure it.

We're not all loaded like you ASM. I could afford to buy the bike on credit (having just paid back the loan on the SV) but insurance on the gsxr will just be stupid expensive for someone who has just obtained his license and doesnt have a no claims discount!

Bah...lets nip this loaded malarky in the bud!

IMO the real issue is that you would be commuting on a sports bike, so its residual value would be ruined by the mileage and servicing/consumables would cost loads. MPG would probably not be especially great either.

If you were to buy a 750, especially a new one, then i'd think you mad if you commuted regularly on it.

Yeah what you really want to do is leave it unridden in a garage for months so it still looks pristine
