The father of one of my colleagues passed his test in the 1930s. That gave
him the right to drive anything, including a tank or a trolleybus! |

That hazard perception test is really really poor in my opinion. The camera view is so static that on one clip I was clicking as there was a car overtaking coming towards me and all of a sudden the car was turning left !! No prompting or anything. However I do think that it should be still included in the test but it does need altering to be more up to date.

It should be remembered that in the Hazaed Perception Test you should be looking for the "developing hazard", i.e. a vehicle moving towards a side-road junction, etc.
Parked vehicles, for example, whilst being a hazard, are not a developing hazard because they are startionary. IIRC, on the test you will see 14 videos and there will be 15 developing hazards, i.e. on of the videos will have 2 DHs. In other words, you could get 100% on the HP test with only 15 mouse-clicks provided that the DHs were spotted quickly enough. Good luck with the Theory Test. Hmm......actually, for anyone with a bit of nouse and streetwisedness, luck shouldn't come into it. Good preparationis the key |

I did my theory several weeks ago which was interesting as I've been driving cars for over 10 years. I didn't bother with the book or cd, there is an online service that has all the same questions you get at the test and you can pay £5 for a months access and use it as much as you want. I used that and just read up on the highway code. The questions were exactly the same as in the test.
www.drivingtheory.net I got full marks for the theory and about 50 for the hazard perception bit, which, in my opinion, is a total waste of time. You are supposed to click the mouse when you see a hazard (which included pedestrians on the other side of the road far far away?) and also click again when the hazard develops. You can't just click lots of times as otherswise you get 0 points for that video clip. You get 14 clips, I haven't been so bored in all my life! |

thanks for the CD's conni.
being playing on them today. The theory test side fo things seems fine. getting 90% + on that side of things (just the odd strange question,i.e what cc motorbike can you tow a trailer with) the hazard perception part is urm odd. i tihnk if you ride a bike(ahem, scooter) you naturally percieve a lot more things as hazards. i could be clicking all day with some the roads that are shown in the clips. anyway, the big day is jan 7th, jsut got to find my paper part of my license before then (now thats a stupid idea, 2 parts to the license!!) k |

well the big day has been and gone and . i failed the hazard perception part. got 44 out of 75.. pass mark is 45... bugger!!!!.
the really annoying thing is i know i spotted all of the hazards as they are blatant, but i must have just been clicking at the wrong time or not clicking enough as they changed. got 34 out of 35 for the highway code bit. so new test booked for end of jan. so any advice. i simply clicked as i saw a hazard. i think i should of been clicking through-out the hazard. i.e car at junction (click) car starts to pull forward (click) car goes into your path (click) ????? any advice. |

Damn, that sucks. I did mine last month so its still fresh in my memory. The instructions you get at the beginning of the hazard perception test are not that clear IMHO.
What you need to do is click the mouse when you spot a hazard, and then click again if the hazard develops. Eg, click when you see a car pull up and about to pull onto the road, and then click again if the car actually pulls out. The other classic example is when you are following a cyclist. Click to show you've spotted the cyclist and click again when he moves into the middle of the road to cycle round a parked car. Sometimes you can click more than twice as the hazard develops even more. Hope that helps, and good luck with the next one! |

sorry to hear that.
In my previous reply i said i got about 45, it was actually 55, after checking the paperwork to update my licence. Anyway, its a bit of a bummer, when i came out i didn't know if i passed or failed because you just don't know what they are looking for. Do i click at everything? will this be classed as overuse etc? All you can do is do it again and be more active with the mouse. Its not that we don't know what hazards are, its a case of clicking on the 1 that scores the points. Once again, bad luck. Reapply and don't give up. |
