and using a scottoiler will only lube one side of the chain or put more lube on one side of the chain.
BS. No fact in this, scottoilers work fine.

i just buy can of chain lube and spray every few days or 200miles (i carry a can round with me most the time) clean with chain cleaner every services (3K intervals/monthly)
Nasty old oil hasnt damaged my O rings in 28000 miles
It also hasnt cost me a penny.

As for the only lubing one side of the chain Ill await Sid Squid to put you right on that.

Well....if you spray any oil liberally over the centre........the chain rolls it all over anyway when it moves. Haven't had a chain naff up on me yet, but then I saturate the chain in oil.

Regarding BB having done 28,000 on the same set of sprockets/chain isn't that irrelevant?

If i rag a bike then they can be way past their best in well under 10,000. However if i carefully pulled away and was all round more delicate with everything i could probably get well over 20,000 too.

Different sets aren't comparable either. No?

Sorry if that's already been mentioned.

I went for option 1 BTW.

This needs to be a multi-choice poll.

I reckon either would be fine. It's doing nothing that causes problems.

I'm a bit cautious about using used engine oil for anything after YC made me aware of its lovely carcinogenic properties. Eeek

You're putting it on chain not drinking it!
