Re: proposal for 6 points for speeding
they were talking about this earlier on. Blithering on about speed and they had a video in the background to illustrate how speed causes accidents... Now theres a silver MPV in the outside lane, then it starts to smoke from the backwheel and then it spins around all by itself with no help from anybody else.
Looked to me the car had a puncture and then it deflated and spun the car around. How on earth was speed the cause of that accident ( assuming I've interpreted the video correctly ) Another guy at work was going on about speeding and how you might hit another car and wipe out a whole family and he had a right go at me because I ride a motorbike and I do drive fast in the car. My reply of "well I could get knocked down by a bus tomorrow, I'm not living my life wrapped up in cotton wool, just in case" didnt go down very well... As said above, we need more coppers on the road, not more legislation that our already over worked and IMHO wrongly prioritied police officers wont be able to enforce...

Re: proposal for 6 points for speeding
I think theres a big difference between riding/driving at speed safely, and doing it like a Twit. Obvious I know.
Put it this way, I'm on the M62 yesterday theres trucks and lorries everywhere, chocoblock. In fact trucks and lorries in two lanes over taking each other like idiots, with little white van man ducking and diving between, tailgating the lot of them. The only thing little old me could do to avoid them was to sail down the fast lane at 80 odd. This was done safely, with a great amount of room left for manouvre, plus it was the only lane free. It wasn't me that was riding dangerously, it was all the idiots ducking and diving and looking like they were going to cause a pile up with stupid driving.

Re: proposal for 6 points for speeding
Good job all is well with the world if the only thing people can find to whine about is speeding. Lucky we're not in the middle of a global economic crisis or anything.

Re: proposal for 6 points for speeding
I found out a interesting thing when I got my points.
Which would you say is the more dangerous road. Dual carriageway or a Motorway, so which one would you say should have the stiffer penalties? . . . . If you get pulled on the Motorway doing over the limit you face upto 6 points and then upto a £2000 fine. But if you get pulled doing the same one a Dual carriageway its upto 6 points and upto a £1000 fine. The road that is designed for high speed traffic has the larger possible fine, while your simple Dual carriageway only has a possible fine of half that? Why? |

Re: proposal for 6 points for speeding
More people speed on the motorway so they'll criminalise more of the population and as a nice fringe benefit make a big pile of cash.
Gordon and chums have noticed that latest economic plan has a slight flaw... it's boll0cks ... [/captain blackadder] .... ah yes ... motorist always an unlimited supply of cash ... use those!

Re: proposal for 6 points for speeding
Well I can say from my own limted experince the biggest casue of accidents I have dealth with involve people over the limit, driving wihtout due care, dangerous driving. Of couse speed plays factor, but its normallym more than one thing. I'm someone with more experined can expand. However I don't deal with fast roads.
I took someone in last Friday double the drink drive limit, I expect them to be banned, plus a good fine. I went two crashes, both casued by drink. Both drivers have been banned, both destroyed of their cars. One of them is lucky to be alive, since I pulled them them from the car. I went to a fatal, they were racin, so yeah speed was a factor, however dangerous driving was the casue, not nice seeing what I saw. Alot of what I see is people not looking properly, most people look as far the bonnet in front of them no advanced vision at all, how can you can back into the back of somone, or knock someone of a motorbike if you were paying attention? Mobile phones are more dangerous than drink drive as they take more attention away from the driver, sat nav's they are pain in the **** "why did you cut a up that car?" casuse I was following my sat nav is what I have been told by some idiots out there, I say so if it said go off a cliff would you? Bad driving winds me up, I'm not perfect but dam it some people just should not be alllowed on the road! Well when it allows I have their car away |

Re: proposal for 6 points for speeding
What I've read, not what I know.
Some time ago there was an exercise where police attending road accidents filled out a form saying, on an informal basis and simply as an experiment, what factors they thought were relevant in the accident. I think something like 30% of reports put "speed" as a relevant factor, which it probably was, but in the sense of "inappropriate speed", not necessarily breaking the speed limit. This was jumped on by the politicians and interpreted as meaning 30% of accidents were caused by people breaking the speed limit, which was definitely not what was being recorded. I'm sure evryone who spends any time on the road will agree that most accidents are caused by bad driving, simple as that. Speed is only one factor. I'd still like to know what percentage of the KSI vehicle occupants were not wearing a seat belt...........but you can't catch them with a camera.
