They just rang round a few local clubs in the the yellow pages to see who was running any kind of beginners course. It's probably the cheapest way to learn as you can generally find they include club hire etc so you don't have to fork out for kit you may end up wanting to wrap round the nearest lampost.

As for learning the rules - they are pretty basic, as is the system of scoring... it's all the golf-slang like 'Birdies' and 'Eagles' etc that take time to learn.

Why don't you book yourself some lessons too? I don't think you will get the feel for it just on a driving range albeit it will help you practice your swing etc... and if you find someone that is a serious as you about giving it a shot then go along with them...
