Absinthe is only banned in certain countries (notably the USA) and there are still major manufacturers in Europe, predominantly in Eastern Europe (Czech Rep. mostly) and Spain. If you know what to look for and buy the right ones, then they are very similar to the originals and they do still contain the active ingredient Thujone, which is often cited as being chemically similar to THC (not sure myself though). The percentage Thujone content is normally regulated though.

The reason why they differ now from the 'originals' that are popular in bohemian fiction is that a) they drank far too much of it b) they often mixed it with all sorts of other things c) it wasn't the purest stuff about and had all sorts of other nasties in it, hence tales of various debaucheries.

The stuff you find behind bars in the UK are nearly always NOT proper absinthe, as they have no thujone but instead have an absurdly high alcohol content designed to get people ****ed when they drink shots of it. Good absinthe is rarely anything like the 70% stuff you see, its more like 40-50%. If you go to Tesco's, they stock a bottle called 'La Fee Absinthe' which is proper stuff. Not as refined as some more expensive continental stuff, but about the best you can find on the mass market here. Prepare it in the proper way (2 traditional methods) or in various cocktails and it *can* have interesting effects...bit variable on person, mood etc. etc.

Can't remember the exact price, thinking about £18-£20 for 75cl, so not exactly cheap. Give me a shout if you want to know how to prepare it as traditionally as could be managed on a campsite . Or alternatively look up the 'parisian' or 'bohemian' methods on the net.

Can't guarantee results either, as it's more a leisurely, long, summery drink than a night-out sort of thing. But if it works properly then, from personal experience, what happens is that there is a kind of reverse drunkeness that sets in. While you might expect all the usual loss of control/crap motor skills associated with normal drinking, things (especially your thoughts) become more lucid. Keep drinking and you will end up ****ed though I guess it is somewhat similar (though not nearly as pronounced for me at least) as the cod-philosophising after having indulged in certain....herbs.

'La fee absinthe' sounds like a good thing to put down on the list of stuff to remember to pack.

Stewie, looks like we might have 2 bottles of it at least at the AR.
