Yep... Also, famously, a london fire station was robbed a few years back and had 2 man-portable hydraulic cutting rigs stolen, might as well be custom made for stealing chained-up things

From the point of view of the owner of a really good chain, these rubbish chains are a godsend- if every bike had an Almax or one of the other impractical-to-crop chains, every thief would have a hydraulic cutter. As it is, they don't need it, since a ?30 set of big croppers does the job.

Go down to your local plumbers merchants - plumbers use the stuff to freeze pipes so they don't have to drain the system down - all for under ?20

You're not just thinking of the aerosol freeze sprays here?

i work with a guy, he's mate was a right naughty bugger, proper bike thief.(bear in mind i'm from east london- i unfortunetly know some dooodgy people)

anyway i had a conversation with my mate about him, being a biker myself i was curious, he had all sorts of ways of getting bikes, they often went out of london to steal them, one was to follow people and 'jack' them at a petrol staion or on thier drive, these guys were very serious, you would have to give up your bike or end up eating through a straw for a month.. or worse.

this was appprently the easiest and best way because it is quick and easy, no driving around at 3am looking for bikes with massive bolt cutters on you.

the bikes they went for are what often are the most popular bikes to own and often go missing teh most-sportsbikes, gixxas, r1's etc your avergae hoodie/joyrider doesnt have bolt cutters they rely on opportunity, ie a bike with just a steering lock on.

there is a good bit to the story, the guy (the tealeaf) died on a bike a few years ago. unfortunetly he took an innocent driver with him.

Those things are for temporarily freezing WATER inside a copper pipe. I very much doubt if the steel in a hardened chain will get cold enough to change its molecular wotsit (?) and become shatterable.

Until someone shows me evidence that it can be done with something you got in Jewsons I'm afraid I'm a non-believer.

BTW, as far as I know, you have to have a licence from the Environment Agency (I think!) to be able to use liquid nitrogen.

One more question... Why do you have it in your building Baph? Is it for refrigerant for servers or something?
Not being facetious, just wondered.

As for Tracker, I'm afraid that I have no faith left in it after my mate's beautiful K6 GSX-R was stolen yesterday by scum. Despite being the Gucci all-singing and dancing version, they only recovered the (removed) Tracker in Dartford, Kent.
exactly same happened to me with my lock, i was disgraced. 2 of my friends hardcore padlocks got jammed too, never again

Oh yeah. Thatcham and Sold Secure both believe that expecting chains to actually resist thieves is unreasonable- no joke, that's basically their statement on the subject, they say it's too hard to make a chain that resists manual crops so they only test on grinding, blunt force trauma and light cutters. Which is like only safety testing a car by crashing it into foam, because other cars are a bit too hard.

So I spent 80 quid two years ago on a Squire SS50 chain, squire lock and ground anchor (ground anchor free on special offer) all Sold Secure Gold.

Any good then?

My disk lock is a Motrax Vishas which was RiDE recommended so I'm fairly happy that was a good buy, they seem to know thier onions.

Chain and ground anchor or lamp post still a better deterrent than an alarm though.
