Can completely see where your coming from with the big company limited things you can do situation. I work at a big uni in their IT dept and there are loads of things I want to get involved in but all the different areas have their own teams so there's no chance, even when you ask. There is so much management and polictics here it's unbelievable.

i'm considering a job in a smaller company where i can try everything and feel needed, useful and not just a payroll number.

Good luck to you and I hope to be doing the same soon

Well, 3 working days in.

Have a nice laptop, a nice phone (one of those keyboard jobbies), visiting a few offices soon around the place. Sharing an office, got my own nametag on the door already

But a little dissapointed. Thought i would be learning lots of new skills, but it seems that im learnings customised apps that lead into the programs i thought I would be learning...... Not much good thus far for the future. I am learning a few bits, but its all company customised, which will make life harder in the future for other jobs.

You get an hour for lunch, but kinda expected to eat, and be back working straight away. Looks like i've got to start making lunches now, bit of a pain. Theres limited food places around, a tescos nearby, but the sandwhiches/hot foods are not great, and they are pricey. Makes the days (extra 1/2 hour) feel a lot longer. Should have expected that really, guess you get used to having everything in the city around you.

I also get the impression they think im more technically minded than I am (I never lied about anything in my interview for exactly this reason!), and the girl I got the job over who has been contracted for a while, seems far more technically minded than I am. A 'front' maybe, and she has got 2 weeks head start on me, but making me feel pretty low and giving me a confidence issue.

No IE access, to any forums, at all, no emails for personnal use, very strict rules on a lot of things. Not so bad, and did expect it, but not to this extreme. Im there to work I know, and im ok with that, but not being able to email a friend or other half at lunch, or check emails or updates is a bit of a downer (esp after having things so easy before, maybe thats the issue, the huge change).

Got to give it more time I guess, its only been a few days, but feeling kinda low about it all. Hope it gets better over the next few weeks. Re-reading this post though, all is not as it was described to be (or what I thought it would be).

Oh, but i did pass my medical with flying colours (bar a little high blood pressure), so thats good

Sounds to me like its a huge culture shock to you Daimo - I had the same when I came to this job. Its the only way to move forward though - you need to push yourself - give it about 8 weeks and you will look back on this and realise it was just first week nerves

Hold on in there!

Two years ago I changed my job, after 17 years at the BBC, it was a huge culture shock.

I never give up on anything, and I shocked myself when I walked into my boss' office the second week and offered my resignation. He refused to take it and I'm glad to say that I stayed and now absolutely love it.
And i've just been offered a promotion, it's a role they've tailor made for me, as they knew when I qualify this year I'll be looking elsewhere.

And I know what you mean about the emailing, I couldn't do that at first, felt so cut off from the world, but have told boss that I do email other half in morning to check he got in ok as he's on the bike, and boss is fine with this.

Stick at it!
Lou

glad to hear someone will have job satisfaction! Good on you for doing something you want to do rather than chase the other rats . Mind you, I've just found the best job ever...it would just take moving to Japan!

Cheers Lou, that makes helpfull reading. It is a huge culture shock, and maybe it is the first few nerves. Guess i'll really find out when the other guy im taking over leaves and i've got to go at it myself.

Viney, I can't really, already skint, but as i found with the other job, the better money doesn't always equal a happyier lifestyle, especially as you spend most of your time at work. If its making you emotionally depressed and sick at the thought of going to work only to make yourself unhappy, you've got to do something about it.

I'll report back in a few weeks. Hopefully feeling a little happier.

I must admit, its a bit different from going outside the office to this...

Was nice eating sausage and chips from the chippy (had to jump on the bike) and sitting down next this......... Feeding the ducks and swans with left over lunch food

You find the new job fun, execting, hard everything it will push you to your limits and then more. I likle my job, but hell its such a rollcoaster. Doesn't help that I'm like rollcoaster my self massive high and lows.

Thge hardest thing I find is seprating work for everything else, I have been told it takes time I hope to master this one soon, plsu everythhing else that gets to me.

For me its the harderst thing I have ever I would say, its really can mess with you. I still remeber the first time I nicked someone, gave evidence in court. I hate being a rookie for me its sucks, you will see. PM if want, I'm in your postion so probally have a unqiue idea of what you will be going through.

Best of luck.
