Patting the top of your helmet as well as a flash of the lights to oncomers (what I do also) are pretty much universal signs among riders I've met from around the globe.

Round these parts thumbs down means a bike is down!
Or from someone at a crash scene...a rider was injured (severely or worse).
Don't want to see a biker giving thumbs down 'round here!!!

Well I couldn't smell them, touch them, see them, hear them, or taste them so I suppose it was a 6th sense!

That's the point of advanced training isn't it? Improve the observations and all that

How are they going to do someone for making a hand signal? As surely to "pervert the course of justice" they would also have to prove the other guy was speeding before you made the signal.

I pat the top of my lid.

I do the "wave hand up and down like I'm bouncing an invisible ball" gesture, too.

Here's a question, though: how far past the police do you go before you stop warning on-coming motorists? I mean, you don't want anyone getting caught but you also don't want their ride-out being ruined by looking for a copper that's 40 miles down the road either!

A police car pull out infront of me today in Durham...
I was going to gresture a hand signal but thought better of it.

later an oncoming bikecop gave me a nod and a wave, so a nod and a wave back.
