Completely agree with Fizz on this. I spend far too much time working in the office anyway. I've no desire to spend more time watching some bone idle sycophants sucking up to the management.

I prefer to choose who I want to enjoy my spare time with.

There are always neg heads in any group who refuse to contribute or get involved so let them wallow in their own self pity and take everyone else out for a day of fun, it will wind the neg heads up even more knowing the others had a great time without them!

good suggestions:

paintballing is fun if painful and having pulled my hamstring last time we did it probably not suitable for everone.

10pin bowling is less physical and you can get drunk as you do it (bonus)

karting is good fun too but its generally not a good idea to get drunk, endurance teams are good for larger groups.

I usually sign up for these things to show willing, then come up with a 59th minute excuse to not go, including how "gutted I am at missing it"

Yes, everybody, I am a Teambuilding Tease

When I ran the helpdesk I did similar to you though, I took them out for a night on the p*ss that I paid for, if they needed time off for stuff that was last minute that was OK and long lunch breaks on friday were mandatory. Overslept in the morning again no proble, a little give and take goes along way I think. But also like you I had hand picked that team so I had an interest in keeping them together and it does work, but I think you need the right group of people in the first place otherwise it just doesnt work. Also it needs to be a regular thing, 1 team building session does not a team make.
+1 for both

I always canvas any team that have worked for me first about 'team building'. If they want to do it I will support them however I will not impose the corporate rubbish on them if they do not want it.

Luckily I work with nice people. However I still want to choose who with and how I spend my non work time. As I pretty much do 50 hour weeks I don't want to spend more time with work people rather than my husband and family.

Well I have little choice in this, although I did duck it last year and am hoping it may fizzle out this year too with no agreement.

I was thinking something to help a chairty or something might be a good idea, but am struggling to find something like this?

Mine are ALWAYS attend if you want. They always all do. In fact it's got to the point where others from other teams ask if they can join in too.

I like them and I enjoy the ones we do, bit narrowminded to dimiss them. I don't think anyones expecting you to have an amazing bonding moment but being kneedeep in mud with a paint ball gun shouting DIE YOU MOTHERLOVERS!! with Rebecca from accounts who you've never spoken to before is very interesting. It oils the wheels a bit, oh and you shoot the people you want to punch
