If the debate was purely about numbers and not race (as his supporters and doubtless he himself) try/tried to proclaim then please explain how the population of the UK has gone up 10% since 1968 and the country has become significantly more wealthy in that time not less.

Personally I think the whole thing was born of his own racism, he played upon the innate racism of his followers / anyone who would listen and wrapped the whole thing in language that allowed him to say "I'm not a racist but...". The worst elements of the BNP do the exact same thing today.
