Hovis, always thought you were a bit of a chopper

In all seriousness, a trip like this sounds awesome; and if I thought I could get away with using 90% of my annual leave on a trip to the US with the boys I'd go like a shot, but I think the Mrs would have words to say

Have fun if you go

just found this, as a rough guide

http://www.ca-motorcycletours.com/?g...FUsa3godPzjXBg

my planning, geography, map reading and sense of direction are crap,

it would depend if anyone is intrested or not, as to weather we did the guided tour as above, where everything is pretty much taken care of, or just get the bikes and head off on our own

i like the idea of the guided tour (my planning, geography, map reading and sense of direction are crap,)

but think it may be to organised, i would like just to stop in a little town in the middle of nowhere, and mingle, and just have a start point and finish point, then do what the hell we want

WHOS WITH ME?

How much you willing to spend on this Hovis? I reckon it would cost at least £4-5k to do it properly. If I had the time, I'd do it though

You don't have to have a sense of direction etc when riding from one side of the US to the other. Just make sure if you are riding west the sun is infront of you in the afternoon and if you are riding east it is behind you

When I was out there we rented a car and was heading west. Because EVERYONE does it this way round the hire prices were ridiculous. I'd recommend starting in the west as it would be alot cheaper.

Same, more expensive than staying at the Moon Palace in Cancun, which for me was my 2nd best holiday abroad.

Have you thought about flying in to Los Angeles or something and buying an old bike and then either selling it or dumping it when you get to the other side (New York?) It could work out about the same price as renting but without the worry of if you crash it / losing your deposit which would no doubt be huge on a new Harley!

I reckon West to East would be best, riding in to the sunrise in the mornings is awesome (til you get blinded by the actual sun!)

TBH i have not realy thought of anything yet, although i think with my limited bike maintance knowlage, i would be a bit weary of this, unless someone wanted to come that knew their stuff

yeah, i was thinking it would be £3000+

but its a once in a lifetime thing

it may be an idea to plan it for next year, so people could have chance to save.

i just started this thread to see if anyone had done it,and had advice
and
if anyone was intrested in doing it

Nah, once you've done it once you'll want to go back! I went to Australia for a once in a lifetime holiday when I was 18 - been back another two times since

Doing adventure travel just makes you want to do it more!

Maybe try going on some American forums and read their stories of where they've been and what stuff is good to do. I've read some of the trips people have done on the BMW GS sites and they're good for giving ideas, pretty entertaining stories too

Personally, at the moment I would avoid the USA and head elsewhere.

Why give them the cash when they treat you so badly just entering the country - take a laptop and they are within their rights to keep it and your fingerprints and a scan of your retinas will be on the FBI database forever.

Oh and dont forget that in the UN vote over what to do in the Gaza Strip last night, they abstained from voting.....
