Old Jags aren't renowned for their reliability.
However if you want the plate it might be worth buying the car if you can get it cheap enough, clean it up, mark it up and move it on, but I'd be worried in todays climate whether there would be much interest from people wanting to buy it off you to be honest. from the pictures it looks like it might clean up ok but you won't know really until you look it over in the flesh so to speak.
Do you know anything else about the car, mileage, service history and how much mot on it etc.

Take it to bits and rebuild it as a Jag-Goldwing-Tourer.

I bought a 17 year old ford sierra for 200 quid about a month ago... £160 fully comp, starts & runs perfect everytime... You can get alot of car for very little money these days jag would a right giggle by the sounds of it albeit maybe slightly thirsty

My reg plate is R81 MRW, i know someone called Richard Winter, if he were 81 years old instead of 21 then i'd be selling him the car for 30 grand it's all about the plate, nice care anyway.

Exactly what I was thinking, a Jaquar like that would be my last choice for a cheap runaround as the basic running costs even ignoring its age are extremely high.

Looks presentable topside but I wager it will have loads of rust underneath

Take your money and buy a plate and save yourself the hassle if your only buying it for the plate

Alternatively ask to buy the plate from the garage

I got one of these Jags a couple of months ago, what an AMAZING CAR. It cost more than my house when it was new but under a grand now. The X300 series like that one are regarded as the best ever and the last proper Jag. They benefitted from the full Ford Motors quality input and are well known to do 400,000 miles without engine work. They were made 1995 - 1997 (before they changed to V8 Nikasil disaster motors). They have a reputation for great reliablility.

I used to go out on the bike on Sundays but now I'm just as likely to just take the Jag out for a drive, it's so relaxing and powerful. Classic Car insurance is £200 comp and £180 for a years tax. eBay has loads of spares so no need to pay Jag spares prices. It does about 25mpg. The silky engine has head pinning acceleration and quite a powerband after 4000rpm, the handling is awesome for any car let alone a big one, it goes round roundabouts as flat as a pancake. Not for everyone but very addictive.
