RE: the above point about regular adjustment, you can quite happily leave it for 1000's of miles untouched after the initial few 100 or so BUT, when it is getting near the end of it's life it will need more attention, so best to adjust regularly just so you do spot when it's sh*gged. I tend to do mine every 1000 or so, but usually I notice more poor gear changes first, which tells me it's time to have a look.

Ophic,Perhaps you should say the chain was adjusted to tight by someone while on paddock stands.
Race bikes don't have any stands fitted so normal practice is to use paddock stands
for wheel and chain.

I noticed that recently, I posted about it as never done it before. Mate is back today so hopefully he'll demonstrate, then I know for future reference.

As easy as it sounds in the manual, I'd rather see it in person so I know for future ref.

Ok what i'm saying is, if you use the manufacturer's recommendation of slack, which is calibrated for the bike being on a side stand, with the bike on a paddock stand, the chain will end up too tight. If you're clever enough to make allowances for this, then go for it.

Worst case scenario is the chain is a bit tight and wears a bit faster. Unlikely to cause a problem unless its really tight.

So you knew it was loose but still did 90 on the motorway?

I wasn't necessarily saying people shouldn't bother checking it at all, just that whether it appears ok when on the side stand, paddock stand or with intricately placed sandbags weighing exactly the same as the rider on the seat then chances are it will be fine.

Me, I'm happy to just let it be adjusted when serviced or when tyres replaced, however I will give it a cursory inspection occasionally and if it appeared loose I probably wouldn't blat down the motorway on it.

Glad it didn't lead to an accident though

yeah... i'm clearly not blameless here. But there was no warning, no earlier glitches or snagging etc. It was also summer and very hot so the 4 hour wait for recovery wasn't so bad. I might have frozen to death in winter!

I've learnt the hard way, but i tend to give my chain a quick shove with my foot every time i get on. I also lube it very regularly... once bitten, twice shy init?

Point taken,as you are following the manufacturers recommendations. I don't have a SV book,it went with the bike
I only thought it would be easier to adjust being perpendicular than on the lean, irrelevant really as long as it is correctly adjusted

Probably is, you can do the adjustment however you like, its the measurement that has to be done the right way.

As I've admitted at least twice that I don't bother to adjust my chain, I'm going to back slowly out of the 'what's the best way to adjust my chain' thread

Apples and oranges there - race bikes are not comparable because they are not being used on the road. No potholes, pillions, etc. Track bikes run different tyre pressure - you wouldn't suggest you ran the same on the road
