I have a thought.
I decide that it is worthy of communication I use language to express the thought The precision of the expression of my thought is constrained by my ability to use the chosen language. The expression of my thought is transmitted by me and received by you, the recipient. The recipient interprets the language; the accuracy of the interpretation is further constrained by their ability to understand the language that I used They think that they understood what they think that I tried to say. Now why would I make that process more complex and less likely to succeed by deliberately misusing the chosen language? Before anyone quotes any of my numerous misuses of language, I did say deliberately, and I can’t spell very well, my command of English is at best mediocre, also I sometimes choose to communicate in gibberish. I hope that I have expressed my thought clearly in terms that you understood and you comprehend my meaning. If that is so you are now aware of my views and can use that awareness to deduce my likely opinions in relation to Sid Squids original post. |

Interesting reading, but I would say that I only half agree with Sid.
Our language continually morphs over the years. Show modern written english to some one from say 200 years ago and they would struggle to understand it, probably going on to claim that it is poorly written. However, punctuation on the whole, will remain constant as it enables our ability to understand the written word in context and meaning. I would profer eats shoots and leaves as a good book to read on this subject. But and this is were I disagree, punctuation can also be morphic. If the meaning of new punctuation is understood by the general populus and doesnt distract from the meaning of the original text then why shouldn't it become the correct way of doing things ???? ![]() Last edited by Rog; 27-06-09 at 08:44 PM. |

I'm with Mr Squid here. What on Earth is wrong with just getting it right?
The thing that has most confused me in recent times is the use of multiple commas... for example, when people might say "I had a great time last night,,,,,, better than last week" or similar. This also happens with other punctuation marks, which is equally confusing. |

Because it looks sh*t and simply serves to show the immaturity of the person who typed it. Last edited by Stig; 28-06-09 at 10:50 AM. |

Never seen anyone abuse the use of the comma before. ![]() For me though it really makes no difference if the individual chooses to use one question mark or ten, it doesn't hinder my ability to understand what's written, can be somewhat annoying though... on a comical note, this,,,,,,,,thread changes nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]() so get over it ![]() |

This forum has sunk to new levels of tedium.
I'm off to Gixerjunkies to attempt to string three words together. |
