Chris you recently replied to a thread of JoshMacs I added to, but checking the ICU connection didn't solve it. I can check whether I'm getting power to the coils easily enough, if not then can anyone help me identify which colour wires supply power to the ICU? I'm guessing it takes power from the generator (Clymer manual term) which is the black/white wire, but there is also a black and white wire from the starter relay, so do I need to check both? I'll also check the quality of the earth. Any help would be great! |

No the ICU takes power from the battery same as rest of the electrics. It is orange/white (not sure about this, maybe it's orange/red). Anyway one wire appears at all 3 coils. This is the hot one that supplies power, with ignition on etc. it should have +12V at both coils and the ICU.
The black/white is earth same as round rest of the bike. That bit coming up from the generator is the pulse coil. green and white wires or something like, that is signal generator which tells the ICU when to fire the sparks.

Cool, thanks for your help, I did get a better understanding of what I needed to do last night when I went through my manual in the warm with a cuppa.
I've got hold of a multi-meter thingy so will identify where the fault is in the New Year. |

I did find a gotcha when I was fixing mine with no spark. If you disconnect the tank sensor it doesnt send any current the coils.

Tank sensor? You mean the fuel tank sender unit? No connection there on 1gen.
Maybe there is on 2gen because it needs to see fuel pump is present.

Mines a gen1 and it has a sender unit if I unplug it no leccy to the coils this is borne out by the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual I stared at for hours before seeing it, still cant believe it though. |
