after much deliberation and weighing up the alternatives

well the knee actually i think 140 mile would be a bit too much just yet so my bud plowsie is picking me up from the train

Welcome to my world Dave, hurts don't it.

I rode about 4,000 miles before I'd ride with anyone else, mainly because I'd have to stop when the pain level made me lightheaded and nauseous,so often, but after a couple of years the pain is more controllable most of the time, well at least I don't wince at each gear change anymore, or not much, still happens now every now and again, but funnily enough knowing I wasn't at my best made me concentrate and focus even more and when I reached my limit it was a no-brainer to stop.

Good luck with the recovery and finding yourself under the bike is a sign you've put the wrong leg down first.......
