If you're a member of a trades union, they usually offer a free will-writing service. Get it done - especially if your domestic circumstances are 'complicated' and might fall foul of the intestacy laws. And encourage your nearest and dearest as well - my terminally ill friend did his last month. If he'd have done it this month it might have been contestible given that he's not 'all there' any more. |

I don't have a lot to be grateful to this wretched government for, but I will give credit to them for changes made to IHT rules which now mean that a surviving spouse now automatically inherits his/her partner's threshold provided that they were married at the time of the death the first to kick the bucket. It used to be that those better able to sort themselves out did it anyway by way of a trust, but the changes mean that its one less thing to worry about. In these circumstances, the IHT threshold is currently £650k rather than £325k. I found this online explanation very helpful: http://www.inheritance-tax-online.co...ax_&_wills.htm Another example of why being married (or in a civil partnership) makes a huge difference. Don't believe everything you read in the "red tops". Last edited by Jabba; 26-11-09 at 10:35 PM. |
