I then looked up the website and said my findings!

I try to only post advice and answers when I know the facts from personal experience. Google is a useful tool to remind me of some points, but I don't cut and paste sections of articles found there where I can help it. If the article I find on google explains better than I could, then I don't have a problem with it.

I did offer , to rummage around all the truth a while back and put up a section all of it`s own and moderate it . This would have been a section that anyone could just go to and look at problems via each part of the bike like Electrical , Engine etc etc etc . The offer was turned down , I think , for legal reasons . If we posted up mis-information it could lead to some really bad legal stuff that could involve lots of money being handed over or even Death in the worst case scenario .

only if there is no disclaimer. after all plenty other forums have stickies of such nature. and most of them are US sites...

but when it comes down to it it's the will of the owner/s of the site that have final say, so we mortals must obey...

Whenever I do some major things to my bike I document it Bibio , then put up a thread with pictures , like I did with my shock swap in the hope that if somebody asks the question then it can be linked to . The fact of the matter is that I often worry that I may have missed something important as I am only going by other info I have gleaned from many posts . I put disclaimers in and cover my bases but still I would worry if I got something wrong and somebody got hurt from my info .

In respect of stickies to tech questions guys.... we in mods corner talk about this issues almost as much as we do about the swears issue. Its an ongoing thing.

For a while we were going to put together a searchable "Knowledge Base" where the often asjked question were asked and answered by those who are known to posses the skill and knowledge to answer the questions. Said people who were tasked with this then realised just how massive a job it actually is and how time consuming it is so that idea was put on the back burner.

However most of the questions asked have been asked time and time again so why anyone needs to use google to find an answer instead of just searching our own forum is beyond me.

There are times i reply to a tech question and simply say "i dunno but someone who does will be along shortly" just to bump the question or not to make the new memeber (if it is a new person asking that is) think they are being ignored.

Giving advice that you dont know 100% to be correct is not just pointless and stupid its also downright dangerous imho.

So i'm with Dave on this...if you dont know, dont answer or at least say "well this is how i resolved the same problem on my bike, it may workf for you too BUT I;M NO EXPERT SO DONT BLAME ME IF IT GOES WRONG" or something similar so people can decide for themselves to take your advice or not.

Just my 2p's worth.

We should have a 'thanks' system on the site (if it's possible) so posters can have the number of times they've been thanked for advice shown below there name. May help indicate whether they're posting shoite or not.

I try to put a disclaimer to most of my tech posts.

Although in fairness everybody is entitled to an opinion and coppers don't always get it right. There is a huge difference between what is written in print (ie: the law) and what goes on in real life and quite often one gets mistook for the other.

Yeah, but when all of us are saying the same thing, I think it is pretty fair to say that we are right!
