I agree with you Mike, it brings North Wales police into disrepute. Far better to have accepted that he was speeding and be done with it.

I was half expecting this bloke to have been caught by a Battenburg X5 with 'Greater Manchester Police' written on it

Jeez! I mention what I really do once (no I'm not a plumber) and The Lone Wolf accuses me of dosing thedonal, now Ed reckons I cover North Wales too!

Now, I'm not shy to admit, I do get about a bit, but that's beyond me!

As for this bloke, he deserved what he got, after running a spurious defence at court. He knew he would get a ban on conviction, so tried his best. Wouldn't you if you were about to loose your licence with the accompanying increse in insurance costs etc. I don't know what the regs are regarding the signs on that road, but when signs do not comlpy with the regs, the limit isn't enforcable. Do we remember the post about the speed limit not being enforcable because the local authority hadn't updated the traffic order but had put up lower limit signs? (http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.p...ht=speed+limit)

Would I have dosed him? On a public forum, I'll say yes, or ask me yourself when we meet next.

Whilst this makes the guy in question look like a plonker, I really fail to see how it brings the Force into disrepute? Everyone is entitled to defend themselves in court, regardless of their profession and whether or not you or I think it is "right" that they use such a defence.

At the end of the day, as a few others have mentioned, if anyone else had done that and used the same defence no one would be questioning it.

I do agree that he should have known better but at the end of the day, he made his own decisions, and HE chose to defend himself in such a manner. How that brings the actual force, and not just him, into disrepute I fail to see.

Obviously attitudes have changed in the police force to constables committing offences as once upon a time this would have been a disciplinary offence in addition to a criminal offence. He did not just commit one offence by exceeding the 50mph limit, but compounded it by exceeding the 70mph national limit. His arrogance by contesting the 50mph speeding charge reflects on his profession as he should be leading by example. North Wales seems to have a good share of high profile police speeding offences.

Pity it wasn't the Chief Constable being done (although I seem to remember him getting a ticket in the past)

Speedplay got it bang on earlier, but I think everyone missed his point?

There isn't a speed limit above 70mph anywhere in this country. So whether or not the 50mph speed limit signs met regulation, or whether it should be a 50 limit at all, is all completely irrelevant. Even if the signs didn't meet regulation and they couldn't book him for speeding in a 50, he was still busting the NSL by 28mph and should be done for that instead. He should have no possible defence other than some type of mitigating circumstances or emergency.
