Might just see how a lump of regular chain works out before shelling for more stuff I'd use once

I reckon it will sit in a tread sipe fine, maybe at a bit of an angle but it only needs to dig in, doesn't matter if it doesn't look neat!

Problem is if it's not flat it won't sit in the tread correctly, hard to describe but if the chain sits one side in and the other on the tread block the whole chain won't be pointing to the centre of the wheel:

They'll trash your rims, and see if you can get the chain between the tyre & swinging arm - if not that'll be foobarred as well.
Just to make life a little easier for yourself, use the old style spring links rather than rivet-on.
