ZXR I rode had rear suspension that felt like a h*rl*y. You felt every ripple... nice bike but I couldn't have one.

You didn't ride it on track then, did you? In this context we are talking about what I think makes a better race bike. While the ZX7R may have felt harsh for the road, they work very well on the smoother tarmac of racetracks, in fact I spannered for an Endurance team for three seasons and was amazed at how an age old design like that could be so competetive. I have ridden 750 SRADs on road and track, and done the same with ZX7Rs - I'd pick the SRAD for road every day, but if I was racing the ZX7R would be my choice; they just seem much better suited to track than road, whereas the SRAD makes a brilliant road bike and a passable trackbike.

Btw, every Harley I've ridden has felt as soft as blancmange when ridden with any enthusiasm

Nope, tried going a bit on one over settle > ribblehead road and decided it was a bad idea after I hit first little ripple and it felt like I'd been kicked up the rse.

If that actually works well on track then fair enough, but it was far from confidence inspiring for me.

Which endurance team?
