So why say something if you don't understand it and have nothing to back it up?

The best one I see on this is a friend says he gets more miles out of 'super', which he might. Trouble is that the extra it costs would pay for enough 'normal' to get him further still!

Yes it's denser by some accounts, and AFAIK everybody who's tested it say that it works out more expensive per mile.

We ran a race tuned engine on avgas for a season and when stripped down at the end of the season it was very clean in the combustion chambers[carbon deposits]but apart from that no noticeble advantage over V max or similar Possibly the only advantage being a cleaner burn but unless the engine is tuned to the higher octane I could not see you gaining any advantage on a standard production engine which is designed to run on 95ron fuel.

Fancy fuel makes no difference at all. It's just a marketing exercise. Any gains in power or MPG shown in the 'studies' used to back up their advertising are from carefully crafted experiments - you can demonstrate any outcome you want through careful design of experiments.

Even if it did genuinely get you 20 miles per tank extra (car obviously, not bike) or whatever they claim, then you just spent that extra anyway because it cost you 5p a litre more.....

It seems others on here know more about the science than I do, but as I understand it the premium grades of petrol simply allow very high compression engines to run without pre-igniting. And we're talking seriously tweaked engines here to need it, probably running compression of 11.5:1 or more? Even then it doesn't "give more power" it just stops it running badly.
