Try a bigger air gap first, just remove 10mm at a time between test rides, much easier than an oil change and see if it sorts it out.

How much travel are you using?
If it is just bimbling along and not in braking that is problem then I wouldn't say it's air gap.

Like zadar says, rebound is a bit weak, so front can ping back up at you and make it feel harsh.

haven't measured the sag's n stuff. but unlike a lot of folk i believe that suspension is there to be used. travel marks are about 3/4 of full stanchion on front and same on back rod.

i'll wind the rebound up a bit and try.

advice was spot on. the rebound is crap. i have turned it half a turn out from hard and its just about right. compression has been turned down slightly as well. bike feels much better thanks.

after a spirited ride yesterday i also noticed that i'm using all of the travel on the front so a bit more preload is called for i think.

bike is now very smooth on nice A roads and a lot better on the bumpy stuff.

i have one more question. when i strped the forks i never cleaned the valving or shims, whould this make a difference to the adjustment range if they were 'dirty'.

thanks

If there is dirt in valves then it means adjusters do nothing as you've basically opened the whole stack.
