that's a very neglected bike, for the forks a scotchbrite pad (but as said stay away from the working area), the exhaust can; give it a good scrape with a screwdriver or something, if and it's a big if, it's solid under the rust, wire brush, paint with krustrust (get it from halfords) and then heatproof exhaust paint likewise with the exhaust guard, the subframe, pillion peg haggers and sump guard scotchbrite pad down, krustrust them paint, the brightwork autosolve and elbow grease.

don't forget to allow the krustrust to fully dry before putting paint over the top of it.

Finially cover everything barring saddle, tyres, brakes, footpegs/hand grips and controls with ACF50, and it just might be worth a couple of bob.

Cheers Mark.
thanks for the info, rarther scared to break off all the rust on the exaust, did remove some and it does seem solid underneath.

ive gone over the forks with wd40 and this is how they ended up

thost little bits i cannot seem to scrub off. is that pitting? would wirewool do the trick, i only used a scoured sponge?

the subframe, couldnt get anything off, what paint would be best just to go over with to cover it?

and another thing, the underneath cover, can that be painted too?

thanks for everything again

EDIT - seems you cant really see the little bits on the forks in the pictures. you can assume what they are like in person i guess.

Oh, and BTW, if you treat an SV like that, it'll also be worth not much at all in 2 years either.

Yes it's pitting, you can't remove that.

You need to sand it back to bare metal, treat the metal with kurust etc. then repaint it (or powder coat). Just slapping paint on top will look...well, like someone slapped paint on top of a horribly rusty bit of metal.

Yes, provided you prepare the surface adequately.

With the pitting on the forks get some araldite on the lower part and fill all the little pits allow to dry and with a new or nice and Sharp fine metal file just lightly file of the excess alraldite the file will not scratch the fork tubes don't worry will stop the fork seal getting trashed I did this on my dads xr400 seemed to work quite well
Sorry if this is a mess on my phone

Hmm, with the finish on the SV doing this to one would be plain cruel. Isn't there is society to protect SV's against abuse or something?

quick ebay search
second hand rear subframe £20
and theres a zuast system starting at 99p

so 80 squid should save hours of work (rsf) and a much needed zuast system
and would add far more real world value than that outlay

Yeah, bit bodgy, but don't use a file, just wet and dry is good for that.

I know it might sound dodgy but its the best for the job as Its very precise wet as dry will still leve fine scratches the file leaves no marks aslong as its used correctly
