Old engine oil is actually very good at cleaning chains.

Thats something I do need to do. Just oil & a toothbrush? or is there a special clever technique?

Just use an old rag, soak it in the oil and then rub over the chain. Wear gloves though as old oil is nasty stuff.

I've used oil engine oil in my Scottoilers for about twenty years.

Do you filter it or anything first?

I use it in my Scottoiler too, however I do add chainsaw oil to it first

No. But I let the oil settle before I put it in the bottle I fill the Scottoiler from - so there's no lumps

I filter out the bits of gearbox and put it on the chain too.
