I would say that some of the worse excesses of the previous government are being relaxed somewhat, but as usual there is a need for eternal vigilance - any time you believe it will never happen, it is probably being thought of behind your back.

I suspect the petition is a bit of a crossover between the EU regulations which are being proposed, and some of the nastier items which are being attempted in France (and as far as I'm aware, are not on the radar on this side of the water).

The highvis thing is a Ireland (Republic) and the French are on there own with the 7 Year rules. The French stance is due to them being told to drop the 100 bhp limit laws

The high-vis is on both sides of us, but slightly different in both cases - the Irish want full-arm coverage, while the French are OK with the vests.

The French road safety minister is on a personal crusade, however - probably angling for a European job down the road.
