Personally, I have a .22 which I've had 14 years, I like the extra punch but a lot of target shooters use .177.
I went to an archery place in south Wales and they did air rifle shooting too, their guns were .177 too, gas powered, 10 shot mags etc, really nice to shoot. But they were £700 plus each. I'll have to bring my .22 over col, I'm getting a new sight for it actually as my existing one hasn't got much distance. |

Yep, you'll have to bring your gun over Phil. What make/model do you have? Will probably be next year now before I go rabbit/pigeon hunting, but we can target shoot in the garden any time. Neighbour says you need to be insured before most landowners will let you go shoot, and there's no point starting an annual policy on that until my shot is consistently accurate with my own gun and scope.

The other gun he sold was above the legal limit for fps so i suspect he had also 'tuned' my one. Im not in to shooting live targets (well maybe the odd human lol) so just targets are good enough for me. |

The CPS and court won't give a flying f*** who modified it, your gun, your record...
If you suspect it's been tweaked either get it chrono'd and get it legal or don't get lifted with it! HW77 is really nice, right up near legal out of box. My question would be for that money why not get a decent secondhand PCP. Shop around, try airgunforum, if it's a hunting tool you'll want toys, bipod, decent silencer and scope etc. which there's a good chance of getting included. Spring guns are nothing like proper guns, all the accuracy is in how you hold them, very dissimilar to traditional marksmanship skills. PCPs shoot just like a proper gun just recoilless. Regarding .22 vs .177, I've got a .177 bsa ultra multi, it's alright. I wish I'd bought a .22 TBH, more for the extra shot count than terminal performance. .177 springers can kick a bit more too for the same physical reason. Old knackered BSA underlevers are easy to be accurate with when they have no kick... I've got a right old rolling block loading one myself ![]()

I also had some nerves about buying secondhand, because I don't know enough about what I'm buying, to know if it's been looked after. Rusty barrels, knackered springs, PCP's that have had the o-ring seals knackered, etc. If I buy new, I know it's in good condition. A naive perspective I know, but being honest, that's where I am right now on the subject of guns. We are in a 'little bit of knowledge is dangerous' territory here. I'm not sure my budget will stretch to a new PCP, plus a gas bottle, etc, etc So we know what we are talking about in terms of budget, I can pick up a new HW77 for £300, plus the cost of a scope puts it up to about £350. http://www.allgunsdiscounted.co.uk/W..._Air_Rifle.htm I would be interested in a recoilless gun, and I ruled out the cheaper HW57 and extended my budget because lots of reviews said it was quite hold sensitive. Thing is the CO2 bottles themselves don't seem to come cheap? How much are refills? Where do you get them refilled? What if you've used your 40 odd shots and need a refill in the middle of a field? |

Gave up on real firearms when the knee jerk reaction killed pistol shooting.
occasionally go to a clays shoot with a couple of friends but my heart not really in that to be honest. I now 'Play' at airsoft instead, much fun to be had and some of the airsoft pistols (even though they are effectivley a smooth bore 'air powered' musket) are surprisingly accurate (exceptional grouping at 15m) these days. the gas blowback on some of the CO2 models is so close to the real thing as to be scarey! |
