Really unlucky mate. Rear brake only in those conditions though at those speeds. Looks like you applied front. Rear would've just locked the back up and you probably would've stayed on. I bet that guy felt guilty for using the traffic lights.

I would have used the rear brake if it was working properly. Haven't had the chance to sort it out as it's always pitch black before and after work. The rear brake sticks on if I use it, getting it sorted at the weekend when there's some daylight hours I can use.

Yeah. My commute to work was fine. It started snowing heavy around 11am and this is what was left.
People were abandoning their cars because they were getting stuck in traffic and on the ice. Someone from my work took 7 hours to get home and that was after leaving their car and walking the rest of the way. Took me 40 minutes to go half the length of the Team Valley Trading Estate, didn't want to filter as I could barely keep the bike upright as it was cause of the black ice. Not as bad today and tomorrow is still looking OK so hopefully I can make it into work and get back home OK. |

I eventually got mine on its wheels again by clearing a line in the snow right along the kerb edge, i lifted the bike high enough so only the rubber of the wheels remained in contact with the road and slid it across the snowy road upto the kerb (2m max) with both wheels against the kerb I had the leverage I needed and sure enough pop up it went on to its rubber. |

One of the things I love about the SV is that it's so light and you can just pick it straight up off the floor like it's a pushbike.
Has been handy when I've dropped it in the shed and there's not enough room to do the reverse bum crawl trick. |

It appears that with the right training, you can actually pick two bikes up at once -

Bad luck old boy! Lesson learnt! Riding on ice requires practice, I have had mates fall off behind me in icy conditions, smoothness is the key, high gear, low revs and V-gentle braking! Also good forward observation.
Many people will say stick to fair weather riding but I had a crash a few years ago on a red hot summers day (2003 I think, the year the pavements and roads melted?) just started to spit with rain and a woman in a mini pulled out in front of me, I grabbed a handful of front brake and POW! Ate the tarmac! Happens to the best of us, glad for you it hasn't shaken your confidence. ![]() |
