My mate is a chef and also from India so we get to eat really good food. I agree with Fallout I avoid takeout much prefer to cook at home, we can normally make a really good curry in about 30 minutes, less if its fish.

I have over the years perfected the ideal Indian menu by which I judge all curry house's

Beer, Cobra or King Fisher are the usual fare, good to have the option of both, bottles taste better. Sometimes you can find something different.

3 Poppadoms and Pickles - x3 not over cooked. Mango chutney nice and thick with good lumps of fruit, lime pickle full over flavor and 1/4's of lime, raita good consistency, cooling with a good hint of mint and onion salad, not always served but is a great addition.

Starter - I never bother usually, Bhaji's are a good staple, and should be perfect. I like mine to be served with a nice salad!!!

Main Lamb Buna - Lamb must be chunky and tender, no fatty or gristly bits. Sauce should be well spiced and quite thick.

Side Takka Dhal - should be thick with half lentils and have a smokey rich garlicly flavor.

Rice Pilaf or vegetable (Pilaf with veg). Should not be overcooked or lumpy and have a fragrant flavor, and veg shuold be fresh and lightly cooked.

Bread Must be Naan, Peshwari, must have burnt bits on the outside and be nice and doughy inside with a nice stretch. Filling should be moist and not lumpy and a scattering of toasted almonds is always a big plus. Plain or garlic naan also work well, a I like a little sweetness with my meal, it adds a new dimension.

Desert deserts are usually not good in my opinion, but I'll always have room for some coconut ice cream served in the half shell.

The venue itself should be old style, small and intimate, with friendly staff that stand off whilst you're eating. Carpet must be Axminster and they must play traditional Indian music. Doggy bags should be no trouble either, I love a curry the morning after and if I'm paying for the food I don't eat then a want to take it home.

Best curry - tea time special for 2 in Dumfries - Lamb bhuna, chicken korma, pilau rice, nan & veg pakora - £7.50

Fantastic.

Wee bit of Korma sauce with my bhuna - Lamb Bhurma = bloody lovely.

Chicken Tikka Balti Kabuki - slightly hot from the llahlbag in Penwortham. Bliss. Have had one delivered to Bristol B-)
It's the only curry that is better than home made. If its not been mentioned already, get a book called the curry secret.
