You are probably best passing on this one.

Hopefully she will pass her test quickly and then step-dad won't be a 24 hour taxi service.

Keep an eye on the sills for rust and the door looms have a habit of breaking between the door and the car if you see what I mean? Looking at about £120-150 for a new door loom

I know its a tad late to be replying to this thread as op has bought a car, but if any one else is in a similar position and the cost of insurance is a factor, it is better to look at cars that are less popular with young, high risk drivers.
For example, I was on the look out for a car for my sister in law a while ago, and the cars on her short list included a mk4 golf 5 door and the equivalent Audi A3 3 door.
You would have thought that the Audi, being a more premium (although basically the same) car over the VW, and being a 3 door rather than 5 door, would be more expensive to insure. It turned out that it was actually significantly cheaper to insure. The insurance salesperson on the phone told me it was because the Golf, being more popular with the younger at risk drivers, were crashed and claimed on more than the Audi.

As an alternative to a Vectra?
The 405 certainly had a good handling chassis, and the xud diesel engine is one of the best made so yeh, despite the French reputation for quality I would rather the Pug.

My point though, was that a more expensive and upmarket car doesn't necessarily mean a higher insurance premium.

You're right and in theory a vectra is a more premium car than an Astra but often cheaper to insure because little old ladies crash them less.
