I think when riding its always better to look for than 20 foot in front of you .

Heavy progressive braking with BOTH brakes would've stopped that bike, nothing wrong with using rear as long as your effective with it.

 They are useful at low speeds to help with manoeuvrability. Also, on a lot of new bikes the front and rear brakes are linked. Pressing the front brake also brings on a bit of rear brake to help settle the bike.
