you can have black plates if the vehicle was MADE before 01/01/1972.
if it was registered today, (not having been registered previously) you could technically still have a black 'uns.
Flippin ek, hair splitter of the year award....I mean this in a nice way

Anyway. AFAIK the withdraw your plate is for people who respace letters on 'cherished plates' eg. TO55 SER etc
If youve got a normal plate then so what of its gets withdrawn and you have to get issued another (excepting the expense, of course).

Anyhow, a 'slightly' littler plate without taking the **** (Id imagine these days the plod consider single liners taking the ****) makes a big difference csometically and probably wont result in a tug

Have to agree with this point. My GSXR had a 5x7 and I was stopped twice, once for speeding, the copper chatted to me about the speed kills thing and mentioned that he would ignore my can and plate. 2nd time I got a tug for my amber lens cover, only other comments were "nice looking bike (thank you officer) and "I like your can" (with a smirk). I had a black visor on too that day....

Don't take the michael, and they (probably) won't give you any stick about your plate.

But why is this. I really don't understand the difference between double line and single line plates. Why are bikes only allowed double line plates???

Motorcycles registered prior to the 1 September 2001 may display a three-line plate.

well if you made it legal size like the car ones then surely it would cover up your indicators... unless you have a very short reg... like AB1 or something.
anything else and you'd have trouble reading it after 2 feet...
