what would you do about road tax?

Incidentally, and I suppose this is contrary to the advice I previously offered in this thread;

A year or so back I was a similar position with the road tax on my car. I didn't get my reminder in the post until fairly close to the day it expired, then it was in the garage for a few days being MOT'd due to mechanical faults, etc. In short; I almost didn't have a tax disc for a day or two. I was almost tempted to say, "Sod it, I won't get pulled in the week or two without it", but made a big effort/rush to sort everything out and got the new disc in the nick of time. Next day, a kid runs out in front of my car (I was doing 20 in a 30) and goes over the bonnet. Now, fortunately there were witnesses saying I hadn't been going too fast and the police were sympathetic to me, rather than adopting the "you're the driver and therefore automatically guilty" approach so often seen in pedestrian/car collisions and consequently recommended the CPS should not prosecute me for dangerous driving.

Now, it may be that I appeared concerned for the kid, rationalised my actions leading up to the collision and lack of skid marks on the road that caused them to behave this way. However, it's always at the back of my mind, that had they seen an out of date/non-existant tax disk when checking the car (they looked at the disk), things could have been very different...
