Not really going to help you. But try and find a job you like the sound of. Something that you think you want to do as a career. Find out more about it do some research find out what the pay is like and can you afford to live , do the things you wanna do in your spare time and then pick that job.

I work in I.T. I really enjoy it. But you might not. The hours can be long and I have to do 24/7 on call one week in every four. Being phoned up by work at 3 in the morning isnt the most enjoyable experience. Often I have to work out of hours at weekends and evenings so I can do maintenance etc etc so it can disrupt my social life sometimes. Working on a IT Helpdesk is the most thankless task you can ever do IMHO. I really wouldnt recommend that.

However, the pay is good for what I do now. Its always challenging and I never get bored. Often I'm faced with situations where something is broken and I don't know how to fix it so I have the challenge of working out whats wrong and putting it right. Which for me I really like. Plus the fact I've worked up through the food chain as it were and now I dont have to work on the helpdesk I get to design & deploy new software and hardware. The biggest thing I've done was to roll out Windows 2000 remotley across two buildings ( approximately 700 PC's ), I also got to setup the software infrastructure that ran one of warehouses that dealt with approx 5000+ parcels a day.

I'm currently managing 3 data centres and am responsible for ensuring that every runs smoothyl and helping to plan an installation of 2.5 million pounds worth on Sun Solaris hardware. Also I am managing moving 50 odd PC''s and associated gubbins 10 miles from one warehouse to another in Swindon.

I get ADSL at home that work pay for and also a laptop that I can use when I'm at home for personal use. This is so I can dial in when I'm on call.
Now your job is the type of job i like

1) Challenge
2) Responsibility
3) Good Pay
4) Job Satisfaction

Ah but it took me 10 years before I started earning decent money. You have to be prepared to work for it. Theres no point looking for jobs that pay decent money if you don't have any experience in the industry you want to work in. You wont get an interview. Trust me I know. Sometimes I do the interviewing. I would rather employe somebody with 2 or 3 years field experience than Graduates with degree's but its all book based learning and they dont actually know how to do the basic stuff. Also it comes down to personality, will they fit within the team of people I already have. I'd rather get a good personality fit and then spend sometime giving training than employing the best person I can find knowing that he / she is going to cause friction within the team or general behave like a moron.

If you want to get into IT go and learn the basics and spend some time on a helpdesk. It will stand you in good stead. But its f*cking boring and soul destroying.

I'll try, but I'll wager your IT department is run by a moron who thinks he / she knows better than the staff they have working for them and tell them how to do their jobs all the time.

I would also wager the system you have now, the people that actually use it had no input whatsoever in the design stage. So know you have something that you didnt want, was expensive and is horrible to use and actually is a pain in the bum
