What course you doing Tara?

Lou - what was it about distance learning was it that didn't work for you - do you find college easier (evening or full time)?
It was fine when I was married, but when I got divorced and had to cope with my daughter on my own I didn't have time. But now my chap lives with me, I go to college two nights a week, which is fine as I need the discipline to do the work, otherwise I'd just be too lazy.

But doing the course with the OU was very rewarding, and I've just looked at the link that Tara put on, and the mathematic courses that there are now are very appealing, so I think I'll be going back when I've completed my accountancy qualification!
Cheers Tara.

I started a Mech Eng. degree course last september ( did an entry level unit as the course proper doesnt start till october ).

The help you recieve is good ( lots of books, software dvd`s ) and the tutor i have is very good.

It does eat into your time, but feels very satisfying when you have all the assignments done.

Make sure you enjoy the subject your studying.

I wanted to do a science based degree, chemistry/physics, however started off on a Level 1 intro to science course, which to be honest bored me silly. Because I had already learnt most of it 2 years previously at school.

Its a fair bit of work, and I seem to recall you need to do the equivalent of at least an hour per night, per week, i.e. 7hrs a week depending on how many points the course had. Sounds easy doesn't it, but giving up your routine no matter how mundane is hard.

However saying that, the local meetings were fairly useful. The tutor was helpful with deadlines and me always being late.

In the end I gave up, but it might work for you. I now study for work based qualifications and have no problems with them as they interest me.

Nope i want to spend my money on doing a job i might actually enjoy for once in my life - if i want to get on a bike I can get on the SRAD, something i might just done once I have done my refresher course with Mr Rictus
Stumbled across another Forums recently. Peeps seem a friendly and knowledgeable lot. Might help to know about it if you/falc have any problems with the bike or getting stuff for it..........

Tara, good luck for whatever course you choose

I completed a BSc 3 years ago and then, if you have 360 points with 120 at level 3 or above and do a final year project (30points) then you could qualify for honours

My basic degree was made up of 300 points from 5 courses and 60 points from transferred credit for an HNC I had done previously.

Tried a 3rd level psychology course and had to drop out soon after starting (for personal reasons) but would probably have chucked it anyway as it was mostly a study about artificial intelligence using a wierd computing language, not really what I expected.

Agree with most of the peeps ref time demands - I found that to get decent grades I had to put in an average of 20 hours a week.

They (the OU) rekon that a 60 point course is the equivalent of a half term at Uni, some people do 120 points per year but probably work part time (or dont work) or are mucho more intelligent than me !.

All in all, I found it a good experience since I kinda dropped out of school at 15 with no formal qualifications and had all the courses paid by my employers as they were directly relevant to the job I do in IT.

Have also found that it helps when going for jobs that you can show commitment as well as a degree (pardon the pun) of intelligence.

All the best
