I run Fedora 4 on 2 of my systems at home, mainly because I use RHES for about 95 servers in my hosting centre so there is a little resemblance between my development and target environments. I did however struggle to get my Oracle database to install and the php was impossible and had to be built from source as it does not come pre built with OCI support built in.

This I think is the issue with running any *nix distribution. You have a nix kernel on which packages are installed to build the distribution of choice. Somebody has put together what they think you need. To run successfully you may occasionally need to tweak the kernel, or build a package as you and not the package builder require it. Generally it is not difficult but you have to be prepared to research and persevere.

I also run VMWare on my "Big" server at home, enabling me to run windoze, a SuSE install( to match a difficult client) and a RHES so I can test in a true work environment.

Bite the bullet. do any install and get on to realise that windoze is micro**** ripping you off with unreliable, bug ridden, bloatware. There may be many ways to skin a cat, but Micro**** only see their way.

Plenty! Give em both a whirl, they'll coexist on the same install quite happily. Both have hardcore followers but KDE is probably more configurable and more fun.

Get kubuntu here. http://www.kubuntu.org/download.php German servers are usually pretty quick.
Essentially they are both ubuntu but one uses gnome for the front end and the other KDE. Support for both available on the ubuntu forums as linked to above.

To install one after you've already installed the other just type
Code:
sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop
or

Code:
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop
at the command line. Bootup will then give you the option of which one to start.

This is a very useful website for the ubuntu noob
