ive always got a bar of vansih stain remover soap bar, and scrubbed em in the bath.

...and mine's black anyway, doesn't show the dirt and so I've never washed it and I don't have any plans to wash it either

That's my attitude; wait till the waterproofing stops working and you've got nothing to lose if it goes wrong. Then wash it with Nikwax. I don't think I'd risk washing textiles where the waterproofing was still working unless they really needed it. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and all that.

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to say a big thanks to you guys for suggesting to use Nikwax to wash waterproof textiles. I have just cleaned my bike gear after a winter of traveling into London every day - my clothes were black and greasy from the fumes - and the Nikwax has cleaned them brilliantly and they are still completely waterproof.

Yet another example of the .org helping people out.
