Surely 1 in 3 means that for every tracer round you can see, there are 2 normal rounds you can't? Wouldn't it be "1 for every 3" if you wanted 1 tracer round for every 3 normal rounds? </pedant mode> |

er, no. Remember, this is the Army way of thinking! 1 in 3 means 1 tracer to 3 "other".
In answer to Blue_SV650S, I wasn't refering to trying to "catch up with" an incoming projectile, rather the time taken to acquire said projectile and lock onto it then shoot it down. In the case of an APFSDS round which, as I have already said, is only about 63mm in diameter, fired at a normally max range of 3000m and travelling at a supersonic speed, the time from it leaving the muzzle of the tank gun to it striking its target would be around 1 second. I don't believe there is ANY weapon system on the market today that could acquire, target, track and shoot down something that small travelling that fast. It just can't be done. End of. The cross sectional diameter of an Exocet or A.N.Other anti-ship missile is a lot larger than that of a tank round and are fired from a far greater distance, so are a lot easier to track. To answer Bluesteel's question, I know a lot about weapons, their uses and limitations 'cos I've used a lot of 'em in the past.

system have been around for ages that do this. it's the last line of defence but a wall of bullets would only need to clip a projectile to get it to break up.

This is all well and good when tackling sea based missiles but against depleted uranium sabots travelling at mach 1 well, I'm sorry, but I just don't believe it. These things are made from unbelievably dense material and I just have trouble getting my head round some small calibre (.30 cal) breaking up or even disrupting the flight path of something that heavy and fast. And as I said before, it would be very difficult nay impossible to acquire, target, track and destroy a projectile flying that fast fired from as close in as 3km.
If it can be done (and I'm talking land-based weaponry here) then ok, but I've not heard of it and, I've got to say, it sounds a bit fanciful to me.
